Michigan Update From The Road

Just a quick note to say we had an hour with Ron at Jolly Pumpkin late in the afternoon yesterday which was one of the most interesting hours I have spent in my life with beer. Plenty of photos of wooden casks will follow but on that whole beer pricing thing - picking up a case of 12 750 ml … read more »
Where To Shop In South East Michigan?

It looks like I will be in the Ann Arbor area this weekend for about 18 hours. My plan is to try to hit Jolly Pumpkin in nearby Dexter for their 12 to 6 pm store hours. But what else? Any recommendations?
Sour Beer Studies: Oro De Calabaza, Jolly Pumpkin, MI, USA

A busy day today that will hopefully continue but the one point of agreement seems to be Jolly Pumpkin beers and - oh, happy day - I have one in the stash. I have been known to Bam and Oro de Calabaza is the strong golden ale by the same happy gourd of a brewer. • Wow. It's like a cross between …
Tripels: Black Tulip, New Holland, Michigan

What beer to drink with baseball? Triples, of course. Or tripels or, like this one from New Holland, trippels. • Black Tulup comes across as vegetative bubble gum. A bit of a shock after that Tripel Karmeliet [which will not go reviewed] and its echos of Hungarian Tokay - honey, almond, that … read more »
The Session: The Brew Zoo

It is the first Friday of the month and that means it is the day of The Session. Rick Lyke named it this time and chose "The Brew Zoo" demanding we all drink beers with animals on the labels. I forgot this earlier in the week when I popped a Struis with an ostrich on the front. That would have … read more »
Brewery Focus: Bell's Oberon Ale, Kalamazoo, MI, USA

Finally, the last of my six beers from Bell's of Michigan. The brewery calls it an American wheat ale but it pours deeply cloudy amber ale under a thin white foam and rim with a whacking great big glob of yeast left in the bottom of the bottle. Not like any American wheat I've seen lately. Drying …
BF: Bell's Special Double Cream Stout, Kalamazoo, MI, USA

This is one of the best beers I have had in a long time. Thankfully, I landed a six pack when the elves drove back from Michigan the other week. This stout defines rich and would be a great introduction to beer for any chocoholic or coffee fiend who says they hate beer: licorice, espresso, dark …
Brewery Focus: Bell's Best Brown Ale, Kalamazoo, MI, USA

The funny thing about brown beer is that beer is basically brown. All beer is brown. OK, almost all beer. Daniels and Parker say at the outset of Chapter 1 of their book Brown Beer: • “While exploring the history of brown ale, we wound up visiting nearly every other style of British ale. From …
Brewery Focus: Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Kalamazoo, MI, USA

I don't know about this Brewery Focus idea. It's getting so unfocused. The other posts for Bells are here and here - but that was a couple of weeks ago. Have I pushed the limits of blogging? Could I get a life and just get on with the review? • The name of the beer along with the picture of the …
Book Review: Michigan Breweries by Ruschmann and Nasiatka

I thought I knew nothing about Michigan Breweries. But one of the nice things about being in Ontario is that is practically stretches from Vermont to the Dakotas leaving lots of opportunity for me and my pals to zip across and then barter their bottles. That is what happened the other week when I …
