Here we are again - another first Friday and another beery topic to talk about in The Session. Generally, I am a very cheery person. One who never finds any issue with anything. I look to the sunny side. I really do. I am so great. But beer fests bug the hell out of me. And here is why:
- I can't get to any. I have a family and obligations and stuff and live in a part of the world that has no beer fests. I have only been to one. I hate that.
- The one I did get to was a real revelation. It was filled with people who weren't getting legless, who were discussing beer and having a great time in a safe and community focused manner supporting local craft beer, food and other products and the great people who make them. Now that I have seen one of these I know that I am really missing out and I know that there is a gaping hole in my community. Damn you, beer fests.
- When I read about beer fests others like Paul go to, I realize there is a fantastic array of the rarest or even fest special beers that I will never have a chance to try, let alone have access to all in one safe and pleasant environment. I have to scrimpt and save and research and travel long distances to find my special brews for home consumption. If it wasn't for beer fests, I would not understand how sad and isolated my life with beer is. Thanks for making me miserable, beer fests.
- Lew says beer fests have jumped the shark, that they aren't what they used to be. Great. I've even missed the good years. $%(&@ You Beer Fests!

The best beer festival that I won't be able to go to this year:
Empire Brew & Music Festival
July 11'th at Clinton Square, Syracuse NY.
If you could only make it to this one Al I know your life would change forever.

I just got tickets to my very first beer fest. The Garden State Craft Brewers Guild Beer Festival, 21 June. I can't wait.

Yah, I'm sort of with you...
In grad school, (Tucson, AZ), we twice drove just north of Flagstaff to camp out and got to Made in the Shade- this was like 98, 99... There was a chili cookoff--a *real* chili cookoff, and serious beer geekery. I liked that alright.
My current local fest , though, not to slag in public or whatever, but it's a little too drunkariffic, in truth. I have to still be down, give props local-wise and all that, and I always get a few interesting fest-specific brews, but.. is it the times that have changed, or the place? Couldn't say. Still... there you go. They do raise a bunch of money for charity, to their credit.
The majority of my beers are contemplative and singular nowadays, too. Like this Green Flash Hop Head... mmmm.... heavy-duty dry-hop aroma!

"To be honest, they are sorta for the young"
That isn't true in the slightest, at least not here in Britain! They're packed with older blokes.
