A Good Beer Blog

-------

Have you read The Unbearable Nonsense of Craft Beer - A Rant in Nine Acts by Alan and Max yet? It's out on Kindle as well as Lulu.

Maureen Ogle said this about the book: "... immensely readable, sometimes slightly surreal rumination on beer in general and craft beer in particular. Funny, witty, but most important: Smart. The beer geeks will likely get all cranky about it, but Alan and Max are the masters of cranky..."

Ron Pattinson said: "I'm in a rather odd situation. Because I appear in the book. A fictional version of me. It's a weird feeling."

Have you actually talked yourself out of liking beer...? If not, resolution one sounds like a nose-cut-off-face-spite situation.

I like #4, though. Almost all the regional/family UK brewers seem to have 'crafty' offshoots these days, and they're generally turning out tasty beer. (We've got a great quotation from Fergus Fitzgerald from Adnams on this subject, but we're saving it for the book...)

We've got a vague plan to do a month doing nothing but enjoying brown bitter, just to recalibrate our taste buds and get back to basics. But not January -- too miserable as it is, plus there's a birthday, which will require a silly beer that costs too much, with a caged cork and weird ingredients.

1) Not call it a New Beers Resolution.

This is my question, BB. Does one really have to drink beer to enjoy beer? It may not be a great question but it's got its charms. For example, if an important factor is that it is a social lubricant, maybe one ought to test periodically if it actually serves that function or does it cause unsociability in its absence?

Instead of taking a year off beer, I long to take a year off keeping up with beer. When I visited Bamberg, I discovered a town where regulars were so regular that the pubs reserved their seats until 7 pm. Imagine going to the same pub every day and drinking the same two pints of beer. Talk about an eff you to beer geekery.

And note that I never said a year off perry!

My end of year round-up from December sort of got to the same place as Jeff and B&B: over the last year I've done the equivalent of stopping trying to buy all the new albums music critics say I should buy and starting digging out all the ones I used to love but have stopped playing.

Loving Belgian beers, well kept session bitters. Bored of wannabe saisons, most things that are sour that aren't from Belgium. Tired of yeasty grapefruit juice. Impervious to the latest awesome tap takeover with a side order of sliders and mac and cheese...

Tap takeover is so 2012.

You know what? I'm bringing lager back.

Lager! Now you’re talking…
