Pete writes a very good post about the sorts of PR firms representing beer clients and the expectation they have that beer writers will provide content for free but it leaves me still asking at least one question. I get the same inquiries from PR firms, investors and prospective craft brewers and I am consistently struck how cheap they are. The biggest names in good beer expect to co-opt you for nothing more than a herder led junket. The most innovative craft brewers offer only to put your name on the label of the beer you designed but they sold. Pete suggests declining politely. I prefer asking who was paying them to ask me to work for free. In either case, the wallets stay deep in pocket.
Why is good beer so cheap? Because we let them.
