It's always fun to come across a story like this that counters all the fibby tales like (i) the one that craft brewers are all struggling artisans or (ii) that big beer is collapsing leaving executives mystified at the depth their own inadequacies. No, this guy is confirming that making money at beer is a gas:
"The beer market in Australia is a billion-dollar profit pool," Mr Davis told an American Chamber of Commerce lunch in Sydney. "There are only six markets in the world that have more than a billion-dollar profit, so it's an untapped market. "And it's a duopoly - like many things in Australia. "We are a land of duopolies and those two duopolists make 30 to 35 per cent margins... "That's been a market that's grown at double-digit rates for the last seven or eight years so it's a no-brainer," he said. CCA has the rights to distribute beers from North American brewer Molson Coors and US craft beer Samuel Adams, among others. "We'll have a bit of fun over the next three or four years," Mr Davis said.
Now that's what I call a happy guy. See, he's being honest. He's looking forward to making a bundle of cash. No pretence of passion? Notice how folk don't have to be passionate about making money? It needs no explaining. Which is what a lot of people in beer thing do. Goose. Egg. Golden.
As long as the story is kept straight, that is. And why can't you? I mean the story works: making beer is fun so you can get away with calling it a "passion" or even a "craft" for that matters. But, really, is is that because you are making money making beer, right? Or writing about it or running a bar or heading a brewing trade association. Because it is fun! Because it is making money... from beer. It's the same story I see whether I am researching the mid-1600s Albany Dutch colonial kettle jockey or the southern Ontario late Victorian magnate... or even the first craft brewing folk before pre-1990s craft bubble for that matter. They are all having the fits and giggles making money from brewing. Just don't admit it. Passion is serious stuff.
