I used to shop at that Wegman's in college. It was an amazing place twenty years ago.

Wegmans is reason enough to emmigrate, i'd think. Though i'd still like a Trader Joes.

Your math is a bit off, Alan. Black Oak Pale Ale, which I'll take over Genny Cream ten times out of ten, costs $1.94 per bottle at the Beer Store, when purchased in a six-pack.,

Rudy's is a restaurant but I take your point - and raise it by the 30 can pack of Jenny I saw for $14.99 just now.

Find me a restaurant where I can get Black Oak Pale Ale for under, what, twice as much and you win.

I was set to leave this alone, but when you cross-referenced from another post, Mr. McL, you forced my hand. I called you on your math because you specifically wrote "cheaper than the wholesale cost of a basic brew in Ontario," which, of course, it was not, as I demonstrated. If you had referred to it being cheaper than any beer you'd find in a bar or restaurant in Ontario, I'd have to agree with you.

Incidentally, as I'm sure you know but perhaps your readers might not, there is no tangible wholesale pricing of beer, wine or spirits for bars and restaurants in Ontario. The best case scenario gives about a 10% licensee break on Ontario wine, less on other products, which amounts to bars paying pretty much the same amount for their booze as do you or I. Which is why our bar and restaurant prices are so high relative to those of New York state. Oh, that and our system of taxation, but we get affordable health care, which I've always thought of as a fair trade-off.

One 50 cent Genny I think I could manage. Two, if the sun was shining, the mercury high and the beer cold, probably. Thirty, even over an extended period of days or weeks, never. I'd get bored.

Well, I rolled a lot into that "but I take your point" so I do so again and will press the period key at the end of this sentence most firmly. I was wrong with the wholesale comparison. And, for the record, the sun was at high noon, the temperature was blistering, the seafood salty. It, as Hemingway would say, was good. I, too, have never bought the 30 pack.

There is a bigger context, too. My observation is really that there is an entire line of modestly priced, traditional light lagers and ales that are entirely fine in themselves in context - and Upstate NY seems to be a hotbed. As we all discuss "session beers" I see that there is a disconnect with what the consumer loves and what craft beer offers. These sorts of light lagers and ales may be a bridge.
