I saw this when I was at Double T's Bar-B-Que in South Bend, Indiana the other week and I didn't quite know what to make of it. It appears that in that state you have to be 21 or older to be in the beer ordering zone of the counter. It makes for a very panicky presence - especially when you are the only customers in the place. It seems like it is wicked and wrong to be between the little fence and the counter while being one foot away on the other side of the fence is the highway to virtue. Just one step between legality and mortal sin.
That being said, the Double T's is one of the best BBQ joints I have been in. The meat was soft and juicy with a smoky tomato molasses thing going on rather than that sort of smoked fall off the bone thing. And by thing I mean style... or thing. I discussed the fact of smelts as a regional fast food with the owner and the cook came out to speak with me and the lad about what there was to do around town. I think I had unsweetened ice tea, the most civilized drink for good BBQ, to go a long with the barnyard special that we split.
