Smuttynose calls this an eminently sessionable, abbey-style ale. Which may make it Belgianesque, I suppose. The colour of aged pine with white froth and rim. The aroma is more grainy than spiced which makes me worry a bit about FBS - false Belgian syndrome. There is, however, comfort in the swallow. A good sequence of flavours goes from apple to maybe a nod to bubblegum to musty attic to rustic hop is enough for me. At 5.2% it's a bit strong for my sort of session but I get the point.
But is it a single? I checked with Ron to see if he had any wise words on the identity of the "single" but he's talking English again. Michael Jackson noted that the single would mainly be found in the monasteries and would be more of a 3% brew so maybe this is more of a one and a half. Good but not overwhelming BAer support. Add a nutmeg, ginger or peppery note and we might have something here.
