No wonder folks say PNG. And what is someone called from there - it's probably Papa Guinenononan for all I know...or just Papan. But whatever it is, that nation's South Pacific Brewery of the National Capital District plays a huge economic role if this article is correct. It produces produced 53.3 million liters of beer for 6.3 million PNGers, generates 2.8% of GDP and creates 6% of government revenue.
While that production would supply less than 1/40th of Canada output for about 20% of the population, the equivalent percentage of GDP would translate to about a 33 billion dollar industrial sector in Canada. Brewing in Canada is worth about 4.3 billion or 13% relatively speaking making this one brewery something like eight times more powerful within its own market than all of Canada's industry.
Neato. So, while may remember that brewing once was a far greater player in the earlier days of western industrialization, we may not think about how it is a major economic force elsewhere still. And, yes, I am sure I have the math wrong - but it's Monday and I am admittedly a very complacent mathematician who easily pleased with these sorts of observations. Neato.
