I use Google rankings to get a sense of the place of beer in the digital world and, yes, where this blog fits into it. The thing is the other night I witnessed a reordering of the "beer" universe whereby everything that had been important had collapsed and oddly lower interest sites like one for the beers of Devon lept ahead of massive breweries and huge sites like Beer Advocate. At first it looked like a revival of the plan to remove blogs from the topical searches but then it looked more like someone had picked up a jigsaw puzzle that had been completed and thrown it against the wall. It seems to be resuffling itself again based on actvity but it I were Molson I would be a bit ticked as it has gone from #5 in Canada (on google.ca) to somewhere in the #50s.
Have a look. Google "beer" and tell yourself if the ranking makes any sense.

I'm happy with the search "beer long island".

So far AGBB has gone from #31 on Wednesday am for "beer" on Google.com to #631 Wednesday pm to #221 now. My emotional well-being is on edge.

At least your still number one when you search for "beer blog".

When this shows up on Google's second page you know something's wrong:
"Beer is the lactation of undersexed and over-aged himalayan goats."

You found the hidden prize, Jonathon! It appears Google has raised the ranking of the use of a word rather than the quality of context. Spammers will be pleased.

Good call on that! I just Googled my blog and I am 26th on the "brew blog" search!
Are you actively working on SEO? I am reading a book about it and it's kind of annoying how the whole process works because there are people out there trying to manipulate the process.
The only good thing I have learned thus far is "the ideal person you want to find your site on a search is the person looking for your site." Other than that, it's throwing s&%* against the wall and seeing what sticks.

I think I know what SEO is but I leave that to my server masters. I am blessed with a remarkable former client and employer that hosts the whole thing here, silverorange.

Three weeks later and it has reverted back. #6 for "beer" on Google.ca and #39 on Google.com.
