Here is a very interesting article on the state of beer taxation in the state of Oregon and some of the...err...instruments of democracy that are involved in taxation determinations:
Seven state legislators - five Republicans and two Democrats - have acknowledged this fall that they accepted expense-paid trips to Hawaii in 2002 and 2004 for conferences sponsored by the Oregon Beer and Wine Distributors Association, and failed to report the gifts to the state ethics commission as required by law.Oregon is reviewing whether to move from 8 cents a gallon to 1.11 dollars - an almost 14 times increase - but have no fear as there is an exemption for brewers under 200,000 which means Rogue and all the other craft brewers should not be affected.

Don't know how to feel about this one. On one hand, breweries I like tend to be smaller, but on the other hand, this might set the stage for more legislation. No sir, I don't like it.
