I get emails all the time for this cause or that but this one seems more interesting than the Nigerian scams or amazing offers from others to repost this blog's content to make them big bucks at their sites:
This is probably WAY off topic for the normal articles that are covered on 'A Good Beer Blog', but one of my friends from England just sent me an e-mail about my old local and I'm just looking for ways to make people aware. Thanks back at you, Todd. I never need an excuse to link to that post I did about Clark's - best pub photos yet. And while I will likely never go to this pub and I do quite like Young's beers ...ah, what the heck! Sounds like the kind of place I would fight for. Young's has made some other decisions that do not exactly smack of supporting tradition and what are we if we do not support those who support diverse quality ales? When I used to live in England, outside of London, there was a fantastic pub called The Rising Sun. In a country where tied-houses are the norm, this was one of the few spots where you could enjoy anything from a local micro to IPAs from the US, smoked beers from Germany, beers from Belgium, and everything in between. Think of something like Clark's in Syracuse, only MUCH better. Apparently Young's has recently purchased the lease on the pub, and are now demanding that Ruth and Dave, who have run the pub since 1982, to remove all of the beers they carry and only sell Young's products. This would be akin to Miller buying The Blue Tusk, removing all of the taps and replacing everything with Miller products.
Lots more information here, where the locals are trying to convince Young's to change their course of action: http://mproberts.co.uk/riser/index.htm. I wouldn't go so far as to advocate a boycott of Youngs, but encouraging 'A Good Beer Blog' readers to send Young's a word of dismay or sign the petition on the web site will help save one of the few free houses left in England. Thanks...
