Situations like this are always difficult, especially down here in the US were people are always looking for someone else blame for their actions.

Of course, the laws and rules differ from state to state and by jurisdiction, but a very good rule of thumb is to make sure if you are providing alcoholic beverages, that you provide at least as much non-alcoholic beverages to drink. That way your guests have easy access to something non-alcoholic to drink as they give themselves some time so sober up a bit before going home.

I'm not sure if there is anything like this up north, but in Central NY, there is a service called "I'm Smart", which will pick up both you and your car and get you home safely if you've had too much to drink. It's a great idea. If you're not a member, a pick-up is $79, which may seem like a lot until you've talked to anyone who's ever picked up a DWI, in which case it's a bargain.

I think during this holiday season we even have a free volunteer service like this - but 80 bucks? Does it get you your car home, too? That would be worth it.
